Can you tell me about the Bachelor of Performing Arts Program?The Bachelor of Performing Arts program is an undergraduate degree program designed to offer structured training and prepare new artistes in the field of Indian classical art forms who will carve niche for themselves.
Q. Who should apply for the course?
Students who have flair for dance and music want to hone their artistic skill and develop their theoretical knowledge should apply for the course.
Q. What are the eligibility criteria?
Student should have completed +2 or equivalent examinations with 50% marks in any stream. Basic knowledge in dance and music is preferable.

Q. Who will teach the program?

Rashmi Rekha Das, Faculty Champion
Rashmi started dancing when she was 12, training under the Late Padma Vibhushan Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra for over 15 years. She has also trained under renowned Odissi exponents Guru Ratikant Mohapatra, Sujata Mohapatra and Padmashree Dr.Ileana Citaristi. Rashmi has performed extensively both in India and around the world in Italy, Canada, South Africa and Brazil. She has also won several awards including the Sringarmani Award and the Ekalabya Award.
Arupa was initiated into Odissi by Guru Pusparanjan Mangaraj, Director, Nrutyanjali at the age of 3. She has been training under Guru Madhusmita Mohanty at the Orissa Dance Academy. She is a Sringaramani awardee and has performed extensively across India and the world including USA, Canada, China, Mauritius, Thailand, Germany, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Beligum and the Middle-East.
Madhusmita began dancing as a six-year old, she then trained under the Orissa Dance Academy to become an established dancer. She is now a senior teacher and the Assistant Director at the academy. She has performed across India and the world in the USA, Thailand, China, Malaysia, Germany, Italy, Croatia and England. Madhusmita holds a Masters degree in Odissi dance (Alankara Poorna).

Q. How is the program structured? What will the curriculum include?
The curriculum is a blend of class room teaching, workshops, seminars, lecture-demonstration program by eminent artistes of national and international repute, study tours, projects and performances. The curriculum features practical papers on the technique of the art form (dance /music), presentations and various choreographies and compositions as well as theoretical papers on the historical, cultural, social, spiritual and contemporary aspects of the art form. The curriculum also includes papers on communication, yoga, Sanskrit, spirituality and other subjects which will enable the artiste to grow with clear vision and understanding rooted in values and integrity.
Q. Do I need to take up advanced studies after completing the Bachelor’s program?
Yes, taking up a Master’s program in the Performing Arts is advisable in order to acquire the skill to perfect and present advanced performances. The field of the arts is like an ocean and going deeper will help explore and enhance the quality of performance.
Q. What are the career options?
- Becoming a stage performer as a soloist, create or join a dance troupe.
- Appearing in the audition tests of All India Radio/Door Darshan Kendra, Indian Council for Cultural Relations where one can get the opportunity to perform in Door Darshan programs and performances sponsored by ICCR.
- The Song and Drama division of India also recruits dancers/musicians as the member of its performing unit who present performances at different places of India.
- Singers can opt for playback singing or can release their own music albums.
- Applying for the senior scholarship awarded by the Govt. of India to young talented performers for advanced training.
- This field requires an aptitude for teaching, initiative and patience. In order to teach, candidates can take up a Master degree in the Performing Arts for thorough knowledge in theoretical and practical aspect of dance /music.
- Candidates can open their own studio to teach as well as find jobs in schools, colleges , universities or other institutions.
Choreography / Music Composition :
Dancers with their creative ideas can work in the field of choreography. After intensive training, dancers can assist senior choreographers to get trained in choreography. This will lead them to take up choreography for stage, films and video albums.
Vocalists can compose music for their own albums or for different cultural productions, shows and films.
Music Arrangement :
Singers can also work as music arrangers for different music composers.
Research Work :
Candidates can also pursue research in their subject or other related subjects.
